  • What is School Centred Initial Teacher training?

    What does SCITT mean?

SCITT stands for School Centred Initial Teacher Training. It is a type of teacher training course which is school based. This route is perfect for people who prefer a hands-on approach to learning and want to learn in a vocational way. Instead of focusing heavily on university-based studies, SCITT allows trainees to learn directly from experienced teachers and engage in real-world classroom settings. This approach can be more appealing to those who want to make an immediate impact on students’ learning and development.

What is the The Priory Training School SCITT like?

The Five Counties SCITT @ The Priory Learning Trust (TPLT) programme combines school-centred training, experience and practice with subject-specific and professional development. This ensures trainees develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be effective teachers. Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the opportunity to gain a Post-graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Masters level credits, which is delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. The University delivers face-to-face training at our training centre (and at our partner training base in Bristol) and provides online tutor support. A QTS-only route can be requested and will be considered on an individual basis.

The Five Counties SCITT @ The Priory Learning Trust curriculum provides a balance between educational theory and cognitive research with classroom-based practice and application. Five counties have developed a well sequenced, interleaved and progressive approach where trainees knowledge and skills build throughout the year. More information about this programme can be found here.

    How will I train?

During the year you’ll train in at least two schools, getting the chance to learn ‘on the job’ – but you shouldn’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end. You’ll be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive support from experienced teachers and mentors. That means you won’t be teaching classes unsupported until the school thinks you’re ready.
